Mayor Dave may cut off WYOU PEG Funding this January!

In his next budget, Mayor Dave may attempt to deny us our portion of PEG-Access fees paid for by cable subscribers!

The Mayor is rumored to have suggested that this money instead be put into the general fund and then have the Government Channel assume Public-Access responsibilities! Sounds like a great idea, doesn't it?

We may close our doors as soon as January and say goodbye to Free Speech!

Print one out, get it filled with the signatures of your friends, co-workers, and neighbors, and drop it off at the station immediately. The Mayor will submit the first draft of his public-access-killing budget on October 7th!

Also, write your alder and tell them what you think of the idea! You can cc us at info@wyou.org. HERE's a clickable map of the Alder's districts. Remind them that in America free speech is supposed to get respect, and that means open access of the television medium to ALL members of the community, not just commercial and government interests.

FEMA Flood Relief

The flood damage that occurred earlier this year in southern Wisconsin took its toll on thousands of home owners. All this month, WYOU is running information on flood disaster assistance available through FEMA.

Taped in our studios, two members of the FEMA team address the issues and means by which people can get help.

Look for the FEMA airings all of September, Tuesdays at 3:00 pm & 10:00 pm; Wednesdays at 1:30 am, 5:30 am & 10:00 am; and Friday at 6:30 am. Also watch for repeat airings in October and later months as well.

3 Odd Moviettes

In our 36-hour On-Air Film Festival this past June, independent filmmaker Steve Sprague screened his short, "Dangerous" to a throng of enthusiastic viewers.


All this month, "Dangerous" is back along with two more of Steve's short films. Watch for the 3 Odd Moviettes at 9:00 pm every Tuesday evening in September...with repeats on Wednesdays at 5:00 am and Sundays at 1:00 am.

National Poetry Slam Winners on WYOU

The National Poetry Slam is a performance poetry competition where teams from across the United States, Canada, and France participate in a large-scale poetry slam. The event occurs in early August every year and takes place in a different US city. This year's slam was held here in Madison, and WYOU's Dennis Cotton was there to capture it on video.

See it all this month, airing Wednesday evenings at 11:30 pm. Catch repeat showings early Tuesday mornings at 1:00 am and Saturday mornings at 2:00 am.

Here's the Scoop on the WYOU Channel Change

OK. Here it is...the latest info from Charter Cable on our upcoming channel change. This is what they have told us:

September 9th, 2008--we will be both channel 4 (analog) and channel 991 (digital)

September 30th, 2008--we will be both channel 95 (analog) and channel 991 (digital)

February 2009--we will only be channel 991 (digital)

So as of September 30th, we will no longer be channel 4.

Democracy Now: Expanded Morning Coverage

With both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions coming up, the popular news program Democracy Now will have expanded coverage of each during the next 2 weeks.

WYOU will carry an extra hour of Democracy Now each weekday morning starting August 25th through September 5th. Catch 2 hours each morning from 7:00-9:00 am CST.

We've recently added some new videos to our WYOU youtube channel. Check out what some of the summer youth groups have been up to here at the station.

UPDATE: WYOU is moving to 991...Maybe???

We have been getting a lot of inquiries as to when we will be moving from channel 4 to digital channel 991. Unfortunately, we don't have any answer yet. Charter Cable originally told us the switch would happen on August 12th. But now that we have passed that deadline, we are still channel 4.

They have not been able to give us any a clear answer, so for the moment, we can't say when (or if) the switch will happen. We'll let you know as soon as we do.

The World According to Jason

Jason Landerud, volunteer extraordinare has a new show! - "The World According to Jason" debuted this month. He and Robert Lughai, the station Program Coordinator & Ed Director, have been working long hours to complete the editing.

The show is essentially Jason having fun in his everyday life, and it's very entertaining. It airs for the month of August, Wednesdays at 4:30pm, and repeats early Sunday at 6:00am and Wednesday at 5:00am. Check it out!

WYOU Summer Youth Groups

The WYOU Summer Youth Groups are in full swing. Every June, July & August, WYOU in conjunction with the Wisconsin Youth Company, conducts weeklong "camps" for middle school-aged kids. They learn about cable access, how to use video cameras, and how to produce their own television show. At the end of the week, the participants put on a live broadcast and incorporate videos and mock commercials that were filmed earlier in the week. A good time is had by all!

WYOU is Moving to Channel 991

On August 12th, 2008, WYOU is moving! Madison's Community Television Station, cable channel 4, is moving to channel 991.

Write this down. Our new channel number is: 991

WYOU's On-Air Film Festival Gets Press

The WYOU 36-Hour On-Air Film Festival starts this Saturday at 11:00am and runs through 11:00 pm Sunday night. Watch for a plethora of local films. From shorts to features, comedies to musicals, we have it all right here on Madison Community Television.
