Today we finished up our final youth video camp of the summer. Over the last 3 months, we've been having groups of school kids here at the station teaching them a variety of hands-on skills. Video production, TV and film development, camera use, acting and editing were just some of the subjects. Depending on the focus of the group and the age level, the kids would either work in front or behind the camera (or both). Some classes had the kids in the editing room, out on live shoots, or deep into the hands-on of creating short narratives and documentary films.
Most of the groups of kids came to the station through a joint venture with the Wisconsin Youth Company. Additional groups included the Madison School and Community Recreation, foreign exchange students, Cub Scouts, home schoolers and more.
Below is one of the many short films produced by the students.

WYOU Youth TV

Supporting youth programing is a very important aspect of our mission. Over the last several years, the station has seen a growth in the number of students that are taking advantage of the television opportunities offered here at WYOU. From grade schoolers to college grads, from short films to live shows, the sheer numbers of students and programming that have come through our studios is a testament to the service that cable access offers the community.
See a sampling of this Youth TV every Wednesday at 3:30 pm right here on cable channel 4.

WYOU Summer Youth Films
Each summer, WYOU provides video production experience for middle school students in the region. Groups of kids...along with WYOU staff...write, produce, rehearse, act, and shoot short films which, when it's all over, end up airing on the station. One of the most widely seen and most enjoyed of these short movies is The American Transport. See other WYOU youth films on our youtube channel.Read more about our summer youth groups in the Daily Page post by Kristian Knutsen.
